School business managers are a valued part of a school’s management team, with their role often stretching beyond financial monitoring responsibilities.However, most schools don’t compare their expenditure to that of other schools to identify potential savings and many schools do not plan to replace business managers who are nearing retirement age.

Recommendations

Schools, local authorities and consortia should:

  • encourage school business managers to share good practice, support one another and identify opportunities for collaboration;
  • support school business managers to pursue appropriate training and gain relevant qualifications;
  • evaluate the impact of the work of the school business manager; and
  • consider sharing a school business manager across a cluster of small primary schools;

The Welsh Assembly Government should:

  • consider how best to enable schools to compare financial data with other schools across Wales; and
  • review the professional development needs of school business managers.
