The Annual Report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales 2012-2013

Summary

The Chief Inspector’s Annual Report is published every January, and provides analysis and commentary on the performance of education and training in Wales during the previous academic year.

The 2012-2013 Annual Report draws on findings from the third year of the current inspection cycle and it also reflects on findings from the whole of the first half of the cycle, which commenced in September 2010.  The inspections undertaken over the last three years represent half of the schools and other education and training providers in Wales, and the report presents the top five recommendations provided to both schools and post-16 providers during this period.

The report focuses on teaching, and findings from school and post-16 providers’ reports over the last three years.  Factors that promote good and excellent teaching are highlighted.  In addition, there is an update on learning Welsh as a second language, and, in the year of the latest PISA results, there is an in-depth analysis of Wales’ ranking in the UK, and its meaning and implications for education in Wales.

Case studies of good practice are presented throughout the report, and a separate document presents the inspection outcomes data for all providers inspected during the last year, 2012-2013, as well as a summary for the three year period 2010-2013.
