Engagement activity, including phone calls, virtual meetings and face-to-face visits provided us with  a wealth of information about our providers during the period between spring 2021 and spring 2022 when we re-started inspection.

We published several reports, which summarised our findings from different sectors. They looked at elements such as:

  • how providers had responded to learners’ wellbeing during the pandemic
  • how providers supported distance learning
  • how schools and PRUs were managing to prepare for the Curriculum for Wales, and their approach to implementing the ALNET Act.

We received positive feedback from headteachers who had appreciated the opportunity to talk to us outside the normal inspection cycle. They valued the open and honest discussion about curriculum reform, and sharing the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic.

Maintaining engagement activity will continue to be an important element of our work.

We plan to visit a sample of schools as part of our routine activity in future. We hope this will continue to give a valuable source of evidence about a range of issues, outside the normal inspection cycle. We may publish summary reports based on the most recent information gleaned from this engagement activity, depending upon key developments at different times.
