School council developing pupils' welfare and setting a strategic direction

Ysgol Beca has united several council groups to help work towards identifying areas of priority for the school and its pupils. Initially, the council gathered opinions using questionnaires from pupils to establish areas of concern. The council's approach has developed the sense of ownership and pride of pupils about their school. Developing a curriculum that improves pupils' skills and enthusiasm for learning

Ysgol Beca has abandoned traditional lessons and used thematic learning periods in the afternoons to develop numeracy and literacy skills through science and ICT. Teaching has taken place in small groups rather than whole class learning. As a result of good planning, pupils have developed to very high levels and take pride and ownership of their work. Celebrating diversity to support well-informed, responsible and tolerant pupils

Clytha Primary School encourages pupils to make decisions, to be inquisitive and think independently by challenging stereotypes in pupils’ attitudes, choices, expectations and achievements. The school has developed highly effective links with a range of organisations, including Stonewall Cymru, Paralympians and Wales for Peace in support of pupils’ personal development. The school uses visitors from the community and beyond to engage all pupils in reflecting on their values. Improving pupils’ wellbeing and attitudes to learning through curriculum enrichment

Empowered and inspired by the new curriculum, Maes yr Haul Primary School has introduced lunchtime and after-school clubs to extend the range of opportunities for pupils, encouraging them to try new activities to improve wellbeing. These include learning about growing plants in the gardening club and developing thinking skills in the coding club. Improving oracy skills using challenging texts

Tywyn Primary School has improved the standard of oracy skills across the whole school by using challenging texts to develop pupils’ spoken and performance skills. Staff have had training provided in speech and language therapy to identify groups for early intervention. Pupils analyse poetry and are encouraged to understand the characters and the underlying themes. As a result, pupils’ self-esteem has improved considerably and they are now more confident when performing for different audiences and purposes. Read more >

Planning a more flexible and adaptable creative curriculum to engage pupils' interest

Pembrey Primary School has changed its approach to teaching by making its curriculum planning more flexible and adaptable in order to suit the interests of the pupils. Six learning zones have been created with resources that support and challenge the development of pupils’ skills. These zones have promoted independent learning through a pupil-led, creative curriculum. Pupils have made strong progress, working skilfully and making important decisions about their learning.
